Walking with your Ancestors: Constellating the Highland Clearances Tir na nOg on Saturday the 22nd October from 10.30am-1pm, £25
The Highland Clearances were forced displacements of the population of the Scottish Highlands during the 18th and 19th centuries. They led to mass emigration to the sea coast, the Scottish Lowlands, and the North American colonies. The clearances were particularly notorious due to the abruptness of the change from the traditional clan system, and the brutality of many evictions. Not to mention the 1746 Battle of Culloden and the Jacboite uprising and the increased exodus of Highlanders to America and Canada. While the collapse of the clan system can be attributed more to economic factors and the repression that followed the Battle of Culloden, the widespread evictions resulting from the Clearances severely affected the viability of the Highland population and culture. To this day, the population in the Scottish Highlands is sparse and the culture is diluted, and there are many more sheep than people. What I have noticed is that there is common thread of individuals who experience restlessness, an inability to settle in any one place or to feel that they have a root or a home. There is also great difficultly around their financial situation with links to debt, the ability to make enough to get by but with no hope of ever getting out of debt or being ‘free’ with everything paid off in full. There is also an interesting dynamic that comes through the male line with almost a disassociation with the next generation. This workshop will explore the tribal Scottish Soul and your connection to it whether you are Scottish, have Scottish ancestry or have been drawn to come and live in Scotland. By uncovering the past and walking with the ancestors in this way you can release the patterns that have flowed down and be free.
